The
Lourve, Paris
The
Musée du Louvre in Paris
is famously home to the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci and contains
one of the most important art collections in the world.
The
Lourve was first built by King Phillipe-Auguste in 1190 as a fortress
to protect Paris against Viking raids.
Plans
to modernise and expand the Lourve were first conceived in 1981
and included the new main entrance. Made of metal and glass, the
pyramid enables visitors to see the buildings around the palace,
while at the same time allowing light down into the underground
visitors' reception area.
The
Louvre contains works by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.
